Find out the 4 Keys for Community Engagement

During the week  I am exploring this topic with my membership community and in my opinion engaged communities and teams, don’t just happen. You have to work at it as the community or team leader.

Firstly why is it so important to have an engaged community and team? We know that if people trust and respect you, they are more likely to follow your directions and cooperate with you. Right?

That is certainly an important concept to think about as a woman in entrepreneurship or the workplace. Leadership is who are you, not the position that you hold. Sadly many leaders get caught up in task mode, instead of paying attention to their team or community members.

IN this article I will be discussing the 4 keys that create the community and team that feels connected, safe, and trusts you as their leader.

Building a Culture

What does culture mean to you? Culture is where a group of people embraces a set of values, knowledge, social behavior, language, and rituals. I think most companies have their vision and values outlined, however, how often do they refer to them, and bring these into normal conversations with their teams.

Women who are scaling their businesses also need to set up teams that are aligned with their vision and values.  These then become the behavioral expectations that everyone is aware of and follow.

For example in my community Lead with Confidence, I associate my members as courageous women. This will become the language that we use inside our community, which leads to belonging and connection. Set up rituals for your community that will show how much you appreciate your group members.

These can be achieved by:

✅ Monthly awards  - Let your team know that you are valuing their contribution

✅ Rituals - How do you start each meeting off - My recommendation is to discuss team values and the direction of the group - Create a ritual that is used every time you run a meeting

✅ Name association for your team or community - Mine is courageous women

✅ Team clothing - One day a week everyone comes to work with the team t-shirt on

These are just some of the ways that you can start to create a culture of belonging and connection. What will you put in place?

Knowing  your Cause or Vision

Having a strong cause or vision will motivate you when things are going pear-shaped. It is more than just knowing your vision or cause, it is about demonstrating it and letting your team or community know your WHY.

Do you communicate regularly with your groups and inspire them by communicating a clear vision, then follow up with expectations and the details that need to be actioned to fulfill the vision? Your role as a leader is to inspire others to take action.

My cause is to empower women within the business and the workplace, to smash through any self-imposed barriers, and drive success in all areas of their lives. To provide engaged communities that support, encourage and uplift women to achieve their full potential.

What cause or vision are you focused on, and how do you inspire others to follow?

Clear Communication

We all like to be feel that we belong and what to know what is happening, especially from our leaders. The lack of communication certainly does impact engagement and trust within any group. If you are not communicating with your group then these consequences will occur

❌ Misunderstandings lead to losing trust and unnecessary conflict with unclear expectations

❌ Gossiping leads to  information being passed through your community or team that can distort the real situation

❌ Mistrust leads to a team that flies under the radar to protect themselves from any ramifications.

❌Broken culture - all the work that you have done to set up your culture will be wasted if you are not continuing to communicate.

These are just some of the consequences, therefore ensure that you communicate with clarity and meaning around your message. Your role as a leader is to inspire others to take action.

Connecting with Others

Understanding your audience or team members will enable you to connect easily with them. Knowing what is important to them and what motivates them will help you to lead with confidence and build trust.

People need to feel safe before they will open up and let you into their world. Some ways of connecting with your teams and communities is by:

✅Share a personal experience that will inspire them to believe in themselves and step into new areas for further development.

✅ Give people hope and show that you are their cheerleader

✅ Use humor, compassion, and empathy

✅ Encourage healthy debates

✅ Show them that you appreciate their contribution

✅ Keep your word and follow-through

✅  Show recognition publicly and critic privately

These are just a few ways to connect with your people.

Now we have covered the 4 keys of culture, cause, communication, and connection, which one is your strongest and which one may need more of your attention? It does take work to build relationships and that is certainly part of being a powerful leader that inspires others to take action.

This information may not be new and it is simple. However, it is about taking action and exploring ways to extend yourself as a business or workplace leader.

Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.
