Align your Values with your Goals
Have you ever been inspired to achieve a goal? Something that you have tried several times and you simply do not follow through. It could be taking up that podcasting course, and you get so excited to start then you find over the next few weeks your excitement has faded, you stop focusing on creating your podcasts and you spend your time scrolling through Facebook Instead. Jumping from one creative idea to another.
Or perhaps you are looking at transitioning from your job into your own business. Again, you are excited with the thought, start to research some ways to start up a new business, then slowly the motivation drops, you hear the small voice in your head that tells you to play safe don’t take risks and you are now spending your time watching your favorite Netflix videos.
Is it that we are afraid of commitment or is it that we are not emotionally attached to your goals aligned with our values that inspires you to overcome the challenges along the way?
Understanding what is important to you and aligning your goals with your values is the place to begin. Once you know your values then stop and ask yourself, what has the highest priority right now. It is not uncommon to move our values around, depending on what is happening in our life. For example, if you have just lost your job then starting a business or finding a new job could be your highest priority, which consumes your focus.
Take some time and write down your values, the things that are important to you. Often people say to me that they simply want to be happy. Now being happy is a state of mind, it is not a goal. I am probing questions to ask yourself is what must change in your life now to make you happy, or when you are happy what you are doing.
For example, if you come up with – Spending more time with my family will make me happy, then set some actionable goals around how you can spend more time with your family.
Remember that Goals need to align with your values first, then inspiration with emotion will follow.
