Bring Confidence to Your Biggest Challenge in the Workplace

Its Magic

Do you struggle at times overcoming your own self-doubts about your capabilities to handle  challenges that crop up within the workplace? Or do you simply try to avoid them by taking a long time to jump into action. Is it because you are  afraid of making a mistake? After all it must be perfect right?

Take a moment and select  one challenge that you would like to overcome this week.  Is  it  a competence issue or is it a confidence issue.?

Of course, being a competence issue is easy to fix, with the right training, resources and  tools to help you to continue your own personal and professional development.

There are lots of ways to gain information such as training sessions, researching industry articles, googling the topic on the internet, asking for guidance from others inside the company, to name  just a few.

Information is everywhere and at times it can be overwhelming.  You may need to have a development plan with a  roadmap to guide you through  your decision making process.

It is important that you identify if the issue you have selected is a Competence issue or a Confidence Issue. And I will be taking you through the steps to help you gain more clarity.

What is Confidence?

Confidence means feeling sure of yourself and your abilities — not in an arrogant way, but in a realistic, secure way. Confidence is not about feeling superior to others. It is a quiet inner knowledge that you are capable. Confident people: feel secure rather than insecure. Do you feel secure in the workplace, and if you don’t then take some time to self-reflect to find out why you are feeling this way?

Gain Clarity

This is where you pause to take some time out for self-reflection. How long has this issue been a challenge for you? And how have you addressed it previously? Self-awareness and the ability to stop and ask yourself some clarification questions will certainly assist you to get to the real issue here.

This step is often overlooked by many with the justification that they don't have time to pause. And this is the problem. When you use time as a way to justify your inactivity, then you are violating Steven Covey's principle of sharpening your saw. You will work more effectively when you know which path to take instead of hoping you are on the right path.

What are your Beliefs around this

Control your Negative Self Talk

You know that nobody can control your thoughts. Your thoughts lead into your emotions, which are demonstrated by your behaviors and actions. This is known as the self-fulfilling prophecy. If you belief that you are not good enough, then you will demonstrate those thoughts though  the actions of someone who has that belief.

Take a moment now to right down your beliefs around this issue. Be honest and get to the truth. For an example one sabotaging   belief is  - "What is the point, nobody listens to me anyway". Can you see if you have this belief then you will probably have inconsistent results. Sometimes following through and other times simply avoiding.

What do you say to yourself when you think about this challenge in the workplace? And what would happen if your self-talk was wrong?

Having the ability to recognize your habits and thoughts that hold you back is the beginning.  Once you notice your negative self-talk, then you can pause to build a bridge that will regulate your emotions.

Many of you may think, well I have not got time to pause and regulate my emotions. And this is where you are sabotaging yourself again.  This then stops you from doing things differently and orientating your thinking so that it is productive and not reactive. When you stop and orientate your thinking, then you will find out the truth as to what is really going on around your challenge.

When you are calm and centered then you will easily engage with others within the company. It all starts with you and what you are focusing on.

Today's Take Away Tip

Once you start to believe in yourself then magic happens. 80% of success is determined by your mindset, which is your approach to the issue. It doesn't matter how much knowledge you have, if you can't implement the knowledge then it is worthless.

"When your actions contradict your Words, then your words mean nothing"
