How to build your Audience email List for FREE

Many new online entrepreneurs focus on the wrong things leaving them feeling disheartened, confused, and directionless? It is critical that you have a roadmap or a success pathway to follow so you know that what you are focusing on will lead to a thriving business.

A common mistake that I see too often is the expectation that if I build a website, and make it look appealing that your potential clients will come. You know the field of dreams movie, build it and they will come. And all you hear is crickets, right? Does that feel familiar to you?

How do I know this? Because when I first started my business in 2001, I did the exact same thing. I paid a lot of money building a website, and then 6 months later, realized that I needed to make changes, as I started to gain more clarity on who I wanted to serve.

Not only did I waste time and money, that I could have used in marketing my business, I also had to pay more money to get the changes made, and yet still nobody came. And I even got caught up on thinking that I needed branding straight away.  Gosh, I made so many mistakes, because i was not business savvy, and I didn’t have any business experience. 

Having a clear understanding of who you want to serve, and the message that will grab their attention is the first step to spend your time and money. And this is the most time-consuming part of your business where research and patience are required. 

Once you know your audience, and you are getting engagement then it is time to build your email list. And this is the topic that I am going to be discussing in more detail for you in this article.

Why is Having an email list Important?

Don’t be fooled by the number of followers and likes you get on social media until they show a small level of commitment, they are just likes and followers. When you get them to exchange their contact information for something that they want, then you know that is firstly are interested in what you are offering, and they have taken the first step along the customer’s journey which leads to your offer.

And the other important thing to consider is everyone on social media you do not own. This means you are at the mercy of playing by the rules of the social media platform, and if they choose to change the rules or close you down, then you lose everything that you have posted and all of your potential customers. Whereas getting your email list of potential customers gives you more control over how you will nurture and interact with them, as it is yours and you own your list. Therefore one of your priorities is to continually be building your list and to stay engaged with them.

What are some ways to build your Email List?

There is a lot of different ways to grab your audience’s attention and to get them to exchange their email address for your free giveaway or a very low-end offer. Some online entrepreneurs will offer things like templates, challenges, PDFs, videos, etc for a low fee, which helps them to keep on using paid advertising to build their list.

It makes sense if you are paying $2 per new potential customer on your list if you are charging under $9 for them to purchase. If you charge then your list will not be as large as if you were giving away your product or service, however, if someone hands over their credit card, then they are more committed than someone who doesn’t and is more likely to move through towards your higher-priced services and products. 

Using Give-away to build your list? What is Involved?

 This is where you will firstly need to complete the give-away product or service. Canva is a great platform that will help you make digital products such as PDFs, E-books, Checklists, Templates, Presentations, etc. What I like about Canva is it is simple, and you don’t need to be a graphic designer to get a professional look and feel. These templates are already designed, and you can get a FREE version of Canva. However, it is a good investment to get the paid version, as you get more features that will move the needle for speed and convenience.

As an entrepreneur, I always look for simple, fast, and convenient. So now you have a great giveaway and you already know that this is something that your audience is wanting. Right. So now you have to build a place for them to download and give you their contact details.


Now it is important to put up a landing page that has your opt-in form embedded into it. A landing page is like a website page, but it has no links or navigation bar across the top. The only link on the page is for your prospect to give you their contact information. There are a lot of software WordPress builders that you would use to create these pages. And today, some autoresponders have landing pages included.

Your autoresponder is the software that stores the information that is exchanged from your prospects, so you can follow up with emails and keep in touch with them, and give them your free giveaway. Now you have a great-looking landing page, with an opt-in form, and an autoresponder connected. Now you still hear crickets and nobody is completing the form right? And you are wondering why?

Some reasons why your Email List is not Growing!

  • Audience reach - you are not reaching enough people
  • Messaging is not connecting with your audience

  • You don't have a compelling headline
  • Not understanding where your audience is hanging out
  • Your giveaway is not solving a problem that your audience has
  • Your graphic is not stopping your audience from scrolling past your post or ad


As you can see there is a lot involved in just this one strategy that is the foundation of your business success. And that is why it takes time to get your foundations in place. Therefore do not rush through this stage, and you will always be revisiting your avatar work constantly.

Never skip over the strategic strategy and get attracted by the shiny objects, which are the tactical strategy.
