What is the most important thing to do in Leadership?
Firstly, let us banish the dinosaur thinking that women are not powerful leaders. Simply decide that this is not a reality in your world. You know that nobody can control your thoughts, it is about how much you believe in yourself that counts.
I was chatting to a client this morning and we were discussing leadership. She asked me what the one thing would be, that she could do that would make a difference within her teams.
As a leader, it is important to be able to communicate the vision clearly and repetitively. The vision will give others a clear picture of where they are all heading towards. It provides a sense of purpose and direction to give your teams a sense of unity.
It is simply not good enough to bring out the vision on a yearly basis. Everyone needs to know clearly what the vision is. I have asked this question many times during my training workshops, and many times people can not clearly communicate it to me. Are we simply ticking the boxes, having a vision in place, then dust it off at the next yearly performance review?
My belief is that the leader needs to communicate the vision at the opening of every meeting. That is right every meeting. I am referring to discussing the vision, not simply reading out the statement. It needs to be displayed in places where people go to every day. I have seen some amazing organizations, who have the vision signed right above the toilets. Yep everyone goes there every day.
Bring your vision alive, dust it off, and have open conversations that involve your teams. Bring back the humanness into the workplace and have real conversations
